Chapter 19 (Ellian):

A Mask Removed

Still holding Selen’s hand tightly, I was guided through a city I once knew so well. When I was younger, I had had so much time to study every nook and cranny from atop my balcony, and I had always done my best to sneak out and catch glimpses of the city and its people. Selen, too, seemed sorely disappointed by the sad state of things. From what I knew, she grew up on the streets here. She knew the stone roads and the many buildings like she did the back of her hand.

‘What was it like to live here when you were younger?’ I asked while we were still removed from any unwanted attention. Selen looked at me with a slight surprise, or shock, visible on her face and whispered: ‘I’m not sure if now is the time. I’ll gladly tell you when we’re back on the ship.’

I nodded. She was right, of course, even if she did hope with all her heart that I wouldn’t ask again. I was looking for pretty much any excuse to be able to distract myself, but walking in silence was the best option currently. We couldn’t risk being overheard talking about the wrong things. In a tense, wary silence, we moved back into the heart of the residential district and then up toward the palace. The streets were quite empty, short of a few patrols of Raven Knights and the occasional individual quickly taking care of some business outside. The knights were still eagerly counting down to “Her Majesty’s” speech. As for where all the people were? They had already traveled up to the palace to hear whatever Rosaria had to say.
